Cannon on Tuesday re-emphasized its commitment to mass produce ultra-thin energy conserving televisions. It said the televisions will be launched in early 2008.
In 2004, Canon and Toshiba had set up a joint venture to produce SED (surface-conduction electron-emitter display panels which will not only be thinner but also consume less electricity than LCDs.
Canon and Toshiba said in March they would delay the launch of SED televisions by more than a year in order to improve cost competitiveness after prices of flat televisions dropped quicker than they had expected.
Kazunori Fukuma, president of the joint venture, SED Inc., said production of SED televisions would start by the end of 2007 but full-scale production would only start in 2008
Analysts were of the view that the steep fell in the prices of flat-panel television will halt the production of SED televisions.

these so called analysts predicting that SED will not come to market because of lowering LCD prices, are typical of the non technical people commentating on stuff they know nothing about, people when they see SED picture quality
will buy it! simply because it has a better picture, LCD OR
PLASMA are never going to be able to maintain sales at the rate they are now, sharp claim their 4 ms refresh rate is not noticable from 1ms of SED, but thats still 4 times slower dummy! as for the LCD with 1 million to 1 contrast ratio, has any body been given the technical details on how they have achieved this? the answer is NO! if it was so easy to do, then sharp would be incorporating the technique in their current LCD range, another bit of public relations beatup by the LCD crowd
Now that Canon and Toshiba have had a breakthrough in the manufacturing process, competitive production costs may be in their future.
