The new 56″ Samsung HL-S5086W, 1280×720 DLP HDTV is quite noticeable with its remarkable performance and a reasonable price tag of under $2000. As usual, it boasts Samsung’s DNIe (Digital Natural Image Engine) video enhancement circuitry that is turned off by default in the movie mode. The HL-S single-chip DLP sets integrate a faster color wheel, with five color segments for additional color accuracy. The HL-S5686W features both an analog (NTSC) as well as a digital (ATSC) tuner. But, it lacks the Cable CARD slot and there is no support for the digital cable. The low-cost HDTV can adjust into smaller places than other 56-inch sets. The major limitations are its average black level and it can’t use one video mode for all inputs. Still, the deal is quite alluring at such a levelheaded price for the big screen.
